The Power of Being All In is about the challenging leadership environment we are facing today brought about by political and social upheaval in the United States, the pandemic, global unrest, war in Europe and threats of war elsewhere, and economic stress. It summarizes the scope of change in each of these areas, describes what a healthy culture must look like now, and argues that uncertainty will be the new reality in which we must learn to lead and thrive. Most importantly, it teaches the leadership principles and skills required in this new environment.
This book reflects much of my leadership journey, particularly what I’ve observed and learned during the last five years. I wrote it because there’s a meaningful and instructive story here, driven by everything we’ve been through. Over the past several years, we’ve faced disease, war, social chaos, economic crisis—all on a scale none of us could have predicted. The scope of this astounding change has transformed our world and all of us as leaders, for better or for worse.
Regardless of the circumstances, leaders must step up when times are tough. Those we lead deserve it. If we don’t step up, we fail ourselves and them. Unfortunately, many leaders haven’t yet recognized that the current challenges and uncertainties have created an urgent need to grow their leadership capabilities and adapt to changing times.
I wrote this book to respond to that need and provide practical knowledge and training to prepare leaders to adapt and thrive in our new circumstances. For additional insights, I feature interviews with fourteen senior executives with experience in a wide range of industries and the military. They share lessons learned from these past several years, including wins and losses around strategy, staffing, operations, and tactics. Their experiences are invaluable in understanding where we’ve been and where we are likely to go.
Major General Robert W. Mixon, Jr. retired from the U.S. Army in 2007 after more than 30 years of active duty. Robert commanded armor and cavalry units at all levels, from platoon to brigade.
He also led the Army’s Task Force Modularity, a team of highly skilled military and civilian experts chartered with changing the Army’s force design while at war. Their mission was accomplished in less than one year, transforming the United States’ battlefield formations and allowing the Army to dominate the enemy in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
Mixon also served in senior positions in the Department of Defense, including his role as Deputy Executive Assistant to General Colin Powell, the then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Upon retirement from the Army, Mixon transitioned to impactful leadership roles in the private sector. As President at Magnatag Visible Systems in Macedon, NY, he successfully navigated the company through the worst economic crisis in America since the Great Depression.
Mixon then became Executive Vice President of CDS Monarch, where he and his team provided life and job transition services for over 1,500 people with developmental disabilities.
He also helped found the Warrior Salute Program for Veterans with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and TBI (traumatic brain injury). In 2014, he co-founded Level Five Associates, a leadership and strategic planning company serving companies and organizations nationwide.
Robert Mixon, Jr. is the co-author of the #1 bestseller, Cows in the Living Room: Developing an Effective Strategic Plan and Sustaining It (2014) and the author of We’re All In: The Journey to a World-Class Culture (2017) and Who Saw This Coming? Now What Do We Do? (2021).
